WHILE TENDING MY GARDEN

Lucinda McDermott

During the quarantine I have spent a lot of time gardening. Working the earth, planting, transplanting has provided me with a physical pursuit while my mind and emotions grapple with this changing existence. The objects floating and trapped in the chicken wire are various dreams, heartaches, visions, thoughts, musings, and endeavors done and lost. I know that these emotions and thoughts are shared by others around the world. Covid-19 has connected the entire world like never before. In some ways this is comforting, oddly. In other ways, it makes mourning one's own loss prohibitive. I was gifted early in spring with a lot of chicken wire that was used to enclose and protect my garden. What is used here is what is left over.

Materials: chicken wire, wire, found objects, sealant, glue, cloth, plants
